Information on Proposed Water Rate Increase to be Shared at Upcoming Community Open House Meeting
City of San Diego Water Department Invites San Diegans to Review Critical System Repair and Expansion Plans

San Diego -- Residents and business owners within the City of San Diego are invited to join the City's Water Department as it presents details for a proposed water rate increase. The community open house will be at the Neighborhood House, located at 5660 Copley Drive near Convoy Street and I-52 in Kearny Mesa on Wednesday, April 3 from 5 - 7:30 p.m.

An annual 6 percent increase is needed from fiscal year 2003 through 2007 to continue the upgrades and expansion of the water system to meet requirements of the California Department of Health Services Compliance Order. This increase is also necessary as the Water Department seeks to maintain the requirements of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, rehabilitate aging infrastructure, enhance security at Water Department facilities, and support the on-going operations and maintenance of the department.

"Those attending the open house may review the department's commitment to keeping San Diego's drinking water supply safe while providing enough water to effectively serve the growing business and residential communities within the City," said Water Department Director Larry Gardner.

San Diego's Water Department is currently in its fourth year of an eight-year Capital Improvements Program resulting from a strategic planning process derived in 1997 with input from a citizen's advisory group. The Strategic Plan for Water Supply and the resulting CIP were approved by the City Council in 1997. The requested increases are needed to continue the CIP and complete vital projects scheduled through 2007.
