The Water Operations Branch of the Public Utilities Department is dedicated to providing customers with a safe and reliable water supply, and quality customer service in an environmentally sensitive manner. This Branch is responsible for:

  • overseeing more than 3,300 miles of pipeline in our distribution system
  • managing 9 reservoirs with a total capacity of 415,000 acre-feet: Barrett, El Capitan, Hodges, Miramar, Morena, Murray, Lower Otay, San Vicente, and Sutherland.
  • managing 3 treatment plants - Miramar, Alvarado, and Otay
  • operating 29 distribution reservoirs and standpipes throughout the San Diego region
  • pumping water across about 130 different pressure zones with the assistance of 49 pump
  • maintaining more than 276,000 metered service connections and more than 25,000 fire hydrants
  • delivering more than 200 million gallons of water per day to customers
  • serving over 1.3 million customers in the cities of San Diego, Del Mar, Coronado and Imperial Beach
