Water Purification Demonstration Project
Public Involvement
During the Water Purification Demonstration Project, the purified water produced at the project’s pilot facility is returned to the recycled water distribution system. But if a full-scale water purification project with reservoir augmentation is approved for San Diego, the water produced would be sent to all districts and communities in the city. Because of the potential widespread impact, public participation is a vital component of the Water Purification Demonstration Project. See below for information on ways to be a part of this important project for San Diego’s future.
Tours
Since June 2011, the Advanced Water Purification (AWP) Facility has been open for tours to
the public. Taking a tour is a great way to not only learn more about the project, but also
to see the state-of-the-art water purification technology up close. Tours last about an hour
and involve a presentation and a walking tour of the facility. You must register in advance.

Speaker Bureau Presentations
In addition to, or in place of, a tour, we also offer speakers bureau presentations. A member of our team will come talk to your organization about the very latest on the project and answer your questions. Presentations generally last 25-30 minutes.
To request a presentation for your group or organization, email
purewatersd@sandiego.gov or call (619) 533-6638.

“Consistently after people have learned more detail about how the [water purification] process works, they have come around to understanding and supporting the process” –Judy Swink, Citizens Coordinate for Century 3
