Sunny McLernon, MSW, CICA


Sunny McLernon joined the San Diego City Auditor’s Office in 2011. She has been working in the public sector for close to 15 years, with the vast majority of her career doing performance auditing. During this time period, Sunny has made recommendations that span many topics—such as State recycling, Medi-Cal operations, social service funding, succession planning, and contract oversight—to help improve State and local government. While at the California State Auditor’s Office, in addition to performance auditing, she was a specialist responsible for handling public record inquires, monitoring certain legislation, and preparing analyses of audits requested by the legislature.

In addition to creating recommendations designed to create accountability in government, her goal is also to make recommendations to increase government transparency. In 2013, she was part of a team of auditors that won an ALGA Knighton Award for their work. Sunny is a Certified Internal Controls Auditor, has obtained her COSO certificate, and is a member of IIA and ALGA. Sunny has a Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California, and a BA from the University of California, Los Angeles.
