Alyce Smith-Cooper joins us at the Ocean Beach Library in honor of Black History Month to tell the story of the Underground Railroad from the perspective of Harriet Tubman. Alyce Smith-Cooper, an African-American Ancestral storyteller with more than 35 years of experience, will share Harriet Tubman’s story, and her courage, with each person in the audience. Those who attend the event will step into the past and learn about how an amazing system of escape routes was created and used by African slaves to travel to freedom.

GNG is an African -American run business. In the last 6 years GNG has grown its urban sharecrop to include over 150 edible home gardens throughout San Diego County!
Mia Vaughnes, Co-Founder of Good Neighbor Gardens, presents on urban sharecropping and cultivating community in San Diego!

The panelists' discussion will be informed by the title of Norris' work The Grace of Silence. The experts will explore silence as an expectation, but also as a means of Black resistance to racial injustice in the United States. They will discuss how silence is interwoven with respectability, shame, and anger as it permeates familial interactions, gender dynamics, and conceptions of Black citizenship.
