Library eBook Collection Moving to cloudLibrary

San Diego Public Library is pleased to announce that the Library’s e-book and audiobook collection currently hosted by OverDrive will be hosted by cloudLibrary beginning April 14, 2017. The majority of our OverDrive content will be transferred to cloudLibrary. The only titles that will not transfer are older ones that have publisher restrictions. Holds placed on OverDrive titles will not transfer, so patrons can place new holds in cloudLibrary starting April 15.
We are making this switch for two major reasons: ease of use and increased content. The cloudLibrary is app-based and has a simple check-out procedure. By having cloudLibrary host our collection, we will also become members of cloudLink. This program allows cloudLibrary customers the option to share their collections with each other. Patrons will have access to thousands of additional titles.
Download the cloudLibrary app: The set-up is simple: download the app, log in one time with your library card and pin number, and then you are set. If you have any questions or concerns about this switch, please contact us.

Why are we making a change?

San Diego Public Library is always looking for opportunities to provide better services at a better value. We believe cloudLibrary will provide a more user-friendly interface, more availability of items and will provide access to additional titles. The cloudLibrary is app-based and has a much simpler process to check out and download material.

This switch will provide significant cost savings to the library in terms of platform and support charges. These savings will be used to purchase additional content and will allow us to continue providing this free service to our patrons.

When are we changing platforms?

The OverDrive titles will be available on cloudLibrary starting April 15, 2017.

Will holds be transferred from Overdrive to the new CloudLibrary Platform?

No, holds will not be transferred to cloudLibrary. You will be able to place holds on titles after they have transferred to cloudLibrary.

How much of the current Download Library collection will transfer to the new platform?

Our current collection, including audiobooks, will be transferred to the new platform with a few exceptions. The vast majority of our collection will be moved to new licenses within the cloudLibrary system. The exceptions are items that were purchased previously but are no longer available for licensing due to publisher restrictions on availability.

Are Kindle devices supported?

The cloudLibrary platform works with tablet-style Kindle devices such as the Kindle Fire. Unfortunately, the cloudLibrary system does not currently work with e-ink Kindle devices, and we recognize that there will be an impact to individuals who only have a Kindle e-ink eReader.

What devices will work with Audiobooks?
As with e-books, downloadable audiobook playback is app-based. This provides a simple and intuitive interface for playback of audiobooks. It does, however, mean that audiobook playback is limited to app-capable devices, such as phones, computers, iPod Touch, etc. Basic MP3 players are not supported at this time.
What training is available?

San Diego Public Library has PDF icon eReader clinics in which patrons can bring their devices in and have staff work with them to download books. View the current PDF icon schedule and list of locations where clinics are available:

Can I return an e-book early?

Yes, you can. Go to “My Books” and click on the List View in the upper right hand corner. Once in list view, click on the “return” button.
