Rec Centers and Libraries

We’re highlighting City rec centers where programs and classes are offered for all ages, everything from karate to ceramics and outdoor sports. 

Also in FY18, patrons at our 36 City libraries checked out millions of items, from books to online materials and even Wi-Fi hot spots. 

Recycling and Composting

City employees are working for you. Sometimes that means doing the dirty work, composting food waste and picking up tons of recycling.

Opportunities for All San Diegans

City staff are helping train and engage the workforce of tomorrow through the Internship and Work Readiness Program, which provides internship and mentorship opportunities in a variety of City departments.

Local Business

We're helping businesses flourish in San Diego. During FY18, our Economic Development Department distributed 49 grants providing $1,243,240 in funding. Streets and Potholes

Right now, crews are making street repairs in neighborhoods across the City. Repairs on asphalt streets range from filling potholes to repaving or reconstructing an entire street segment. Mayor Kevin Faulconer has pledged to complete 1,000 miles of street repairs in five years and the City is on track to meet that goal ahead of schedule. Solar Power and CNG Trucks

We are focusing on sustainability with everything we do. That means incorporating zero emission vehicles and alternative fuels like compressed natural gas (CNG) in the City’s fleet. We’re also adding solar power to City facilities, including libraries and rec centers, which provides shaded parking areas for visitors.

Firefighters and Lifeguards

We’re getting a glimpse of what the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department did in FY18 to keep residents and visitors safe. Medical aids, cliff rescues and putting out fires - the work never stops. 

To better serve our communities, four new and refurbished fire stations were also opened in the communities of Hillcrest, Point Loma, Little Italy and City Heights.

Signals and Street Lights

We're working to keep our streets safe and smart. The City has a Vision Zero plan to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries by 2025. Included in that plan are safety measures to improve sidewalks and crosswalks, like audible pedestrian signals.

We're also a smart city, using LED adaptive-control technology on hundreds of outdoor lights.

Construction and Arts

Whether it's building a new bridge or supporting a dance program, the City of San Diego is investing in our communities. This work includes long-range planning for construction projects, building new facilities, and providing funding for 133 nonprofit arts and culture organizations.

Public Works

During FY18, the City opened new neighborhood parks, playgrounds and even the largest skate park in San Diego County. The American Public Works Association recognized the City with awards for several projects, including the Linda Vista Skate Park, and honored Mayor Kevin Faulconer as a strong advocate for public works.

Airports and CityTV

We're working for you every day, in the sky and on the airwaves! In our #ByTheNumbers series, we're highlighting some unique City services. Did you know the City of San Diego owns and operates two airports? And, CityTV provides live coverage of City Council and Committee meeings.

Permits and Inspections

Whether it's new construction or a home remodel, we're helping San Diegans plan and build their next project. Find our development process guide are available at sandiego.gov/development-services. OpenDSD also provides online services available 24/7.

Arts and Special Events

As a City, we aim to create a meaningful cultural experience for residents and visitors. We're celebrating San Diego's Civic Art Collection: sdcivicartcollection.com. The City also permits film projects and special events like December Nights.

Christmas Tree Recycling

One of our favorite holiday traditions is the annual Christmas tree recycling program. Residents can recycle their trees starting Dec. 26 at 16 locations across the City.
