As the Assistant City Attorney of the Criminal and Community Justice Divisions, Mr. Hemmerling oversees eight prosecutorial divisions with nearly 200 attorneys and staff. The Divisions prosecute nearly 23,000 criminal cases a year as well as civil enforcement of code violations.   

Mr. Hemmerling began his career in the City Attorney's Office as a criminal prosecutor, serving in the General Trial and Appellate Units. He then transferred to the Civil Division where he advised Neighborhood Code Compliance. He subsequently served nearly eight years as legal advisor to the Chief of Police. Mr. Hemmerling was Chief Deputy of the Public Safety, Labor and Employment Unit before transferring back to the Criminal and Community Justice Divisions to become the Assistant City Attorney in November 2015. During his tenure as the Chief Deputy, Mr. Hemmerling sat on the dais with the City Council representing our Office at City Council meetings. Mr. Hemmerling is also assigned to the City Attorney's Crisis Response Team that advises key City leaders at the City Emergency Operations Center during critical incidents.

Prior to the City Attorney's Office, Mr. Hemmerling served as a San Diego Police Officer for eight and a half years, receiving a Commanding Officer's Citation and two Life Saving Citations. Mr. Hemmerling's assignments gave him extensive experience in investigations, gangs and narcotics. He was certified as a Field Training Officer, responsible for supervising and developing police academy trainees and graduates for duty as police officers.

In addition to almost 24 years of dedicated City service, Mr. Hemmerling retired in 2014 from the Marine Corps Reserve, completing 30 years of faithful service to our country. He rose to the rank of Colonel in his three decade career, including active service in the Gulf War and the war in Iraq.

Mr. Hemmerling graduated from the University of Central Missouri and earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego.
