Job Nelson serves as the Chief of Staff and handles policy duties for Councilmember Zapf. Prior to coming on board, Job served Mayor Jerry Sanders as Director of Intergovernmental Relations. The Intergovernmental Relations Department oversees the City’s lobbying efforts in Sacramento and Washington D.C., as well as serving as the City’s interface with SANDAG, Regional Airport Authority and other regional governmental efforts. During his time with Mayor Jerry Sanders, the City secured over a billion dollars in state and federal funding for housing, transportation, public safety and border projects. He also served as the City’s Stimulus Czar.
Additionally he has managed a number of major pieces of state and federal legislation for the City including successfully carrying legislation on airports, land use, water, parks and public safety. He served as the City’s liaison to the California Big 10 Mayor’s Alliance and was one of the City’s representatives at the Urban Partnership Advisory Group run by the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Job’s career in public service includes serving as Senior Policy Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff to former San Diego Mayor Susan Golding and as a Policy Consultant to the California Senate Minority Leader.
Job Nelson’s private sector experience includes heading up University Relations for Point Loma Nazarene University, serving as a Director with Public Policy Strategies and serving as a Research Analyst with the local polling firm-- Competitive Edge Research. He has written opinion pieces that have run in the San Diego Union-Tribune, the North County Times and the Daily Transcript.
Job Nelson has a BA in Communications from Point Loma Nazarene University and an MA in Public Policy from Claremont Graduate University.
