First Lady Visits City Heights
The sun was shining, temperatures in the middle 60s, and the mood was upbeat as the national spotlight shone on the New Roots Community Garden in City Heights.
The guest speaker was First Lady Michelle Obama who made a surprise visit to San Diego to help promote Let's Move, her national campaign against childhood obesity which was launched in February.
New Roots, a 2.2-acre triangle of land, located at 54th and Chollas Parkway, is an urban farm, divided into plots and tended by families from many different parts of the world who have settled in this diverse area of the City. This farm offers people from different cultures a place to grow fruits and vegetables to help supplement tight family budgets.
Many have contributed to making this urban garden a reality. It is funded in part by the California Endowment.
