SAN DIEGO – On July 7th a San Diego Police Officer stopped a resident for jaywalking and was filmed asking about the person’s citizenship. Councilmember Georgette Gómez issued the following statement regarding the incident:

“It was brought to my attention that a police officer in City Heights asked a resident about his immigration status, against San Diego Police Department policy. My office has brought this incident to the Mid-City Police Captain’s attention and we are working on resolving the incident. I am also urging SDPD to release the video.”

“As Councilmember, I will work to clarify our policies to ensure incidents like this do not occur again. It is clear that we need more training for all our officers and further invest in community policing within SDPD. We must do better to recruit and engage our community members with SDPD.”

“Should you witness further incidents like this, please contact our office at [email protected] or call (619) 236-6699.”
