For over 50 years, the Cooper Family Foundation has celebrated the historical Emancipation Proclamation and end of US slavery through a one-day cultural festival known as Juneteenth. On June 17, 2017 this free event strives to provide an educational and culturally enriching event to the whole community that cultivates a sense of pride in African-American history and culture. Located on the 2800 block of Imperial Ave, the festival includes free entertainment, free food and community resources. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. This FREE community festival is a cultural and educational experience featuring African-American dance, music, spoken-word, art and culturally relevant forms of expression that aims to include members of the community who often are excluded from such events because of cost or location. In addition to providing a cultural experience, one of our primary goals is to provide overall well-being, assistance and empowerment to those in our community who are struggling with homelessness, poverty and addiction, thus there are several community-based organizations present to share information and resources with the community. In addition to the various cultural acts and community resources, there is also a large children's fun zone, an interactive history of Juneteenth presentation, a community college scholarship presentation, and FREE food provided to ALL who attend.
