Repair Work Underway On Park Boulevard
As part of a continuing effort to fix streets and diversify transportation options, the City of San Diego started construction on the second segment of the Park Boulevard Resurfacing Project.
Resurfacing of the road follows the completion of the Balboa Park Pipeline Replacement, and will include transit improvements in addition to a separated bikeway from Morley Field Drive to Presidents Way through Balboa Park.
The paving activity consists of removing the old pavement via grinding and installing a new 3-inch-thick layer of asphalt pavement. The work is expected to be completed by the end of February. During the planning stages, the City collaborated with Balboa Park institutions, San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), neighboring communities and the public to implement a high-priority project from the Bicycle Master Plan, while also adding a dedicated MTS bus lane.
The project also connects to recently completed separated bike lanes in Uptown, University Heights and Downtown and will connect with the forthcoming Eastern Hillcrest regional bikeway. Once resurfacing work is complete, Park Boulevard will be re-striped to include a separated bikeway next to the curb line, a single vehicular travel lane and a dedicated transit lane for MTS buses.
The addition of a dedicated bus lane connects to existing dedicated lanes on Park Boulevard, improves transit access throughout this widely used corridor and helps the City reach its Climate Action Plan goals of increasing transit ridership and reducing carbon emissions.
