Faulconer Makes First Trip to Tijuana as Mayor

Mayor Met with Tijuana's Mayor Jorge Astiazarán & City Council

San Diego - Today, Mayor Kevin Faulconer joined by President and CEO of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce Jerry Sanders, made his first official trip to Tijuana, Mexico to meet with Tijuana Mayor Jorge Astiazarán, the Tijuana City Council, the Tijuana Economic Development Corporation (EDC/DEITAC) and key business leaders of the Tijuana/Binational Community.

Mayor Faulconer said, "San Diego's relationship with Tijuana is not only vital to the success of our city, but the success of the entire mega-region. I believe we have a great opportunity to strengthen our ties with Mexico, expand our economic capacity and create jobs for working families on both sides of the border. I will continue to work with Mayor Astiazarán towards our shared vision of prosperity on both sides of the border."

Sanders said, "The San Diego Chamber and its Mexico Business Center were pleased to be part of today's meetings, and look forward to facilitating future discussions about enhancing binational business opportunities and cross border commerce. We plan to pursue many of the priorities discussed today over the next few months, including during the Chamber's upcoming advocacy trip to Mexico City."

In Tijuana, Faulconer pledged to continue to hold regular mayoral and high-level staff meetings with Mexican and Tijuana leadership. Together, the sister city mayors discussed the binational railroad, an enhanced driver's license program, funding for land ports of entry, comprehensive immigration reform and other important border projects including city border infrastructure, pedestrian border access, road quality issues and lighting issues.

Mayor Faulconer also discussed the importance of the U.S. Congress fully funding the recent General Services Administration (GSA) announcement providing over $216 million for the San Ysidro port of entry expansion. Faulconer promised to defend this federal proposal, continue efforts to streamline the border crossing process and expand the flow of goods throughout the Cali-Baja region.
