Mayor Faulconer Announces San Diego to Host the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines

San Diego - Mayor Kevin Faulconer today announced that the City of San Diego and U.S. Golf Association (USGA) have reached an agreement to hold the 2021 U.S. Open Championship at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Mayor Faulconer said, "The U.S. Open presents a fantastic opportunity to showcase San Diego to the world. Thanks to collaboration between the USGA and the City of San Diego, as well as City Council President Todd Gloria's leadership earlier this year, we were able to secure this world-class sporting event. Making this early announcement means Torrey Pines will once again become an instant tourist destination for visitors from around the globe between now and 2021, serving as a major boon to our local economy."

Today, Mayor Faulconer requested City Council President Gloria docket a vote on the USGA contract for next week. San Diego last served as host to the U.S. Open Championship in 2008, which is widely recognized as one of the greatest championships in U.S. Open history. The current proposal negotiated by the City of San Diego and the USGA will result in the City receiving at least $2.5 million, which is $2 million more than in 2008.
