San Diego - The City Council today approved an item proposed by the Office of Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer that will reduce contract delays and enhance the City of San Diego's contracting process.
"To be more efficient and transparent, we have to change the way this City does business," said Mayor Faulconer. "This new City ordinance puts my commitment to a more effective and efficient City Hall into action. Simplifying this process will help the City do more for small businesses-the heart of San Diego's economy."
Currently, the City of San Diego makes every purchase through the Purchasing and Contracting Department (P&C), regardless of the dollar amount. This process results in significant backlogs and unnecessary delays. Mayor Faulconer's ordinance empowers each City department to process lower-level purchases up to $25,000, while retaining appropriate procurement oversight. Empowering the City's departments will allow P&C to spend more time on larger purchases, resulting in better research, planning, scheduling and procurement of critical items.
