Mayor Faulconer Statement on the City & MTS Taxicab Agreement

San Diego - After the City Council's approval of the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) five-year contract extension authorizing the transit system to continue regulating taxicabs that operate in the City, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer released the following statement:

"This contract is a good thing for the City. It ensures that there is a balance in our taxicab industry, so that there is fair treatment of taxi cab drivers. I applaud the hard work of City and MTS staff who worked hard to address important issues in this contract that will benefit San Diego's permit holders, drivers and riders alike."

The contract approved by City Council helps to improve the safety of taxicab drivers and riders by laying out a framework to set new maximums on vehicle age and mileage for leased taxicabs on the road. It also provides clarity for taxicab drivers and owners by determining the appropriate process for transferring ownership permits from one owner to another. Further, the contract also provides a clear paper trail for taxicab driver lease payments by requiring owners to keep receipts and records.

The MTS Taxicab Advisory and City Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee will hold hearings on the details of these policy changes such as new mileage limits. After these committees review these policies, any recommendations will be forwarded to the MTS Board and City Council for approval.
