San Diego - Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer, Councilmembers Lorie Zapf and Ed Harris and the City of San Diego Lifeguard Services and Fire-Rescue Teams joined Toyota today to unveil a new fleet of rescue vehicles and kick off Water Safety Days at the Mission Beach Lifeguard Tower.
Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer said, "San Diego's lifeguards perform vital services to San Diego residents and visitors every day. Water Safety Days and our partnership with Toyota are a part of our City's commitment to creating safer beaches for San Diego families and visitors to enjoy."
Doug Eroh, General Manager at Toyota Motor Sales USA said, "We are excited to partner with the City of San Diego and be the official sponsor of the San Diego Lifeguards Water Safety Days initiative. Toyota has a strong focus on community and safety, and it's a natural fit to provide our durable and versatile trucks for use by the lifeguards to provide rescue and other key services."
Every year thousands of San Diegans and visitors are drawn to the beaches, and for many it is their first time swimming since last season. Last year in San Diego, lifeguards performed 5,273 water rescues at City beaches. The City of San Diego partners with Toyota to promote Water Safety Days, which are special days starting Saturday, May 24th, designated to promote water safety tips at various locations for summer beachgoers. - Saturday, June 14th at La Jolla Cove

This is the third year that the City of San Diego has partnered with Toyota to promote Water Safety Days. As a part of this partnership, Toyota donated a new fleet of 34 rescue vehicles, which are a key tool for lifeguards in beach and cliff safety efforts. The new fleet includes 15 Toyota Tacomas, 12 Tundras, three 4Runners, three Sequoias and a RAV4. The Tacoma and 4Runner will help lifeguards navigate effectively and safely through soft sand and rocky beach terrains, while the Tundra and Sequoia add heavy-duty water craft towing capability.
