Mayor Faulconer Hails U.S. Commerce Department Program Designating Southern California as a Manufacturing Leader

San Diego - Just six weeks after penning a letter in support of the Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership (IMCP), Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer today announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce will designate the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership of Southern California Manufacturing Community (AMP SoCal) as one of 12 manufacturing communities to lead the IMCP program.

"This is a great opportunity for San Diego and Southern California to show the world that we've got what it takes," said Faulconer. "I've always said that San Diego is open for business and this new manufacturing program helps to put those words into action. Over the next few years, I hope to see Southern California as a shining example of how cities can prosper through creating new manufacturing jobs and opportunities."

Launched under the Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA), the IMCP program encourages communities to develop comprehensive economic development strategies to attract global manufacturers and supply chain investments. In December 2013, the federal government announced a national competition to designate 12 communities that will serve as examples to strengthen American manufacturing and accelerate the resurgence of manufacturing in America.

From the 70 communities that applied, AMP SoCal was selected by an interagency panel based on the strength of its economic development plan, potential for impact in the community and the depths of the partnerships across the public and private sector to carry out the plan. Building on the strength of the Southern California companies such as SpaceX, AeroVironment and Sapphire Energy, AMP SoCal unites a consortium of 86 organizations dedicated to transforming the aerospace and defense industry and is uniquely positioned to help produce America's future avionics and aerospace technicians and engineers.
