City Council Confirms Key Mayoral Appointment for Revitalizing Urban Communities

Faulconer selected Reese Jarrett to lead Civic San Diego and bring downtown-style success to more neighborhoods

San Diego - Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer's appointment to lead Civic San Diego was unanimously confirmed by the City Council today. Faulconer appointed Reese Anthony Jarrett in July as president of the city-owned non-profit association, which helps revitalize urban neighborhoods. The appointment moves forward Faulconer's vision for One San Diego - a unified city where all neighborhoods thrive. Faulconer made the following remarks to the City Council:

"Civic San Diego serves as a catalyst for change and economic opportunity in parts of urban San Diego. Confirming this appointment provides Civic San Diego with the leadership to carry out that mission - to create the same type of success in other communities that we've seen in the downtown community.

Last July, I was proud to stand with Councilmember Cole to introduce Reese Jarrett in Encanto - one of the communities that will benefit from Civic San Diego's work. City Heights is another community that can benefit from the tools Civic San Diego used to make downtown successful.

When it comes to helping more San Diego communities flourish, the challenge is great, but the opportunities are endless. We can create the fresh food and shopping options that families need. We can spur the creation of good-paying jobs in neighborhoods that have been hit hard by the recession. And we can spark the construction of affordable and market-rate housing so San Diego families can live where they work and play.

We need someone at the helm who has the vision, expertise and cooperative spirit to help lift up our communities. Reese Jarrett meets and exceeds these qualifications.

Reese is a native San Diegan who has dedicated his life to transforming urban neighborhoods. His professional career spans over three decades and includes every facet of real estate development, community engagement and financing. And Reese enjoys broad support throughout the communities he will be serving.

With new leadership at Civic San Diego, we have an opportunity to create 'One San Diego' where all of our neighborhoods prosper, and more of our neighbors have the opportunity to succeed."

Jarrett started his career in the savings and loan industry as a commercial and construction real estate lending officer at Home Federal Savings and Loan Association and Great American Savings Bank. In 1982, he became the executive vice president and director of the Southeast Economic Development Corporation. Four years later, he formed E. Smith and Company, a real estate investment, development and management firm, and later became a general partner at Cater Reese and Associates. Just before his appointment to Civic San Diego, he served as president of E. Smith and Company. Jarrett is winner of the KPBS Local Hero Award for Business and NAACP Business Achievement Award.
