Mayor Faulconer, City Leaders Offer Solution to Keep State Funds Flowing to San Diego

Resolution Clarifies that Local Construction Projects Qualify for State Funds

San Diego - Today Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer issued the following statement regarding the City's eligibility to receive loans for local water projects from the State of California. The City Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution today confirming that the City's local laws, under 2012's Proposition A, comply with California Public Contract Code, which governs state financial assistance for construction projects.

"State funding is critical to building the public projects our city desperately needs. My office has been working closely with Speaker Atkins' office to ensure the State confirms that San Diego qualifies for financial assistance funds. As a result, and in consultation with City Attorney Goldsmith and Council President Gloria, the City is formally restating that San Diego meets the conditions set by state legislators to qualify for these funds.

The City will operate with Prop A's exception clause in effect until the State Supreme Court decides the matter. Meanwhile, the City of San Diego will continue to seek fair and open competition in all City contracts. We want the best quality work at the best price for taxpayers.

I anticipate this solution will provide the certainty our city needs so that San Diego neighborhoods can thrive."
