Mayor Introduces Non-Profit Inspired by One San Diego Platform

Group Announces $30,000 Donation for San Diego Children in Underserved Neighborhoods

San Diego - Today Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer launched a citywide education program and announced a new non-profit organization, One San Diego, to promote opportunity and inclusion throughout San Diego's diverse neighborhoods.

A $30,000 contribution secured by One San Diego will fund 60 laptops for the City of San Diego's new Do Your Homework @ the Library afterschool program for K-8th grade students. Surrounded by schoolchildren from Logan Elementary School, Faulconer and One San Diego board members presented laptops at the Logan Heights Branch Library. The donation is made possible by a $15,000 gift from the Walmart Foundation that was matched by the San Diego Public Library Foundation.

"Your opportunity to succeed shouldn't hinge on whether you live in a neighborhood north of Interstate 8 or south of it. As Mayor, I'm working to bring people from all walks of life together to overcome our shared challenges, end the division and create what I've called 'One San Diego,'" said Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

"San Diego is a city of opportunity and I want everyone to have access to it. We're launching two initiatives today that will help more San Diegans succeed. Starting today, the City's first comprehensive afterschool program begins at libraries across San Diego. And we're introducing the One San Diego non-profit, which is kicking off its operations by funding dozens of laptops to help students do their homework at the library after school. I'd like to thank the Walmart Foundation and the San Diego Public Library Foundation for their generosity."

One San Diego is a 501(c)3 non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting equal access to economic prosperity, safe and vibrant communities, and an enhanced quality of life to ensure every San Diegan has the opportunity to succeed.

"Mayor Faulconer has been very successful in making our city more inclusive and results-oriented, directing tax dollars toward the services our families and neighborhoods need, such as this new afterschool program," said Tony Young, Board President of One San Diego. "But as successful as the Mayor has been, he can't do it alone. It takes all of us, working together in our neighborhoods, to make change. So I've joined with other San Diegans to create the One San Diego nonprofit, which will work to promote thriving communities, economic prosperity and youth opportunity."

One San Diego will partner with workforce and skills training programs to better prepare students to find a career; engage and empower San Diegans through neighborhood forums; build thriving communities with beautification efforts; back programs that encourage San Diegans to start and grow small businesses; support the organization of the Mayor's Office and City of San Diego; promote access to K-12 education programs and initiatives that reduce barriers to higher education; and give grants up to $2,500 to neighborhood organizations to help fund these and other efforts. One San Diego is not part of the City of San Diego, and the Mayor has no formal authority over the group.

At the recommendation of Mayor Faulconer, the City of San Diego Fiscal Year 2015 budget funded the City's first comprehensive afterschool program. The Do Your Homework @ the Library program provides one-on-one assistance to children for school-assigned homework at targeted K-8 schools. It adds a learning coordinator in 18 San Diego libraries where curriculum-aligned resources, technology and community partnerships work in tandem to support students. The program also capitalizes on San Diego public library equipment, staff, Wi-Fi access and digital resources, including the HelpNow! online tutoring program.

"As the city's literacy leader, the library system is perfectly situated in the community to implement this valuable new program that advances the Mayor's Neighborhoods First initiative," said Misty Jones, San Diego Public Library Director. "We are working closely with the Mayor's Office and the San Diego Unified School District to make sure the program benefits students and all San Diegans."

The afterschool program begins today at five libraries - Logan Heights Branch, San Carlos Branch, Pacific Beach/Taylor Branch, Scripps Miramar Ranch Branch and the Central Library. The program is scheduled to expand to 13 additional libraries in January.

When the City supports its libraries, it creates a culture of philanthropy that makes it easier for the Library Foundation to attract individuals, foundations and corporations willing to add their private support."

Since taking office last March, Mayor Faulconer has focused his efforts on bringing quality neighborhood services to every community. After the economic downturn forced years of service reductions, Mayor Faulconer's inaugural One San Diego budget, passed last June, brought library hours to their highest levels in a decade. On November 8 he celebrated the beginning of new library hours that offer extended service in evenings and on weekends.

  • Overview: One-on-one assistance to targeted K-8 students from area schools with their school-assigned homework, as well as opportunities for skill development and reinforcement, for 36 weeks per school calendar year (Traditional and Year-Round as appropriate) at 18 libraries.
  • Mission: A welcoming, accessible, safe and supportive space in each of the 18 libraries where curriculum-aligned resources, technology, community partnerships and volunteer service come together to support child development and academic success; where a student can work independently or with the assistance of the Learning Coordinator and/or the Homework Help Volunteers.
  • Program: A Learning Coordinator in each of the 18 libraries, with support from Homework Help Volunteers, will offer students out-of-school-time instruction in accessing and evaluating information to complete their class assignments, supporting Common Core Standards projects as well as planning and implementing age appropriate strategies and activities to assist children with homework assignments and learning in general.
  • Basic schedule: Total of 14 hours per week (for 36 weeks) at each library site:Monday & Thursday 3:30pm-5:30pm; Tuesday & Wednesday 3:30pm-7:00pm; Saturday 11:00am-2:00pm
  • Resources: The program will capitalize on library equipment and staff, Wi-Fi access, and wide array of print and digital resources for students, including the HelpNow! online tutoring program.
  • Staffing: Two Library Area Learning Supervisors (Youth Services Librarians) to oversee program operations, including: recruit, train and monitor performance of staff; provide project support and evaluation; develop and maintain informational and statistical records; and participate in community partnerships and engagement, outreach to area schools and other Library educational and literacy initiatives. Additionally, hourly Learning Coordinators will be working in each of the 18 libraries.
