Mayor Announces Innovative Education Partnership with National University

San Diego - As a part of his commitment to foster a city government that creates opportunities for all San Diego residents, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer today named National University, the 2nd largest private nonprofit university in California, as the City's Preferred Employee Education Program Partner and announced that the university will provide scholarship opportunities to all 10,000 city employees.

Mayor Faulconer said, "As mayor, I'm committed to providing innovative education opportunities for all San Diegans, which includes our City's hardworking employees. National University is a long-standing and loyal institution to the City of San Diego and has already helped many employees and elected officials advance their careers. It is only fitting that we grow this partnership to create more opportunities for more San Diego residents."

Dr. Michael R. Cunningham, President of National University said, "Being recognized as an educational partner by the City of San Diego is an honor and validation of the quality education we offer all our students and a reflection of our unwavering commitment to the communities we serve. As a nonprofit university dedicated to serving the public good, we believe in the power of education in professional development. Providing San Diego employees with affordable access to a quality education through National University benefits not only individuals, but the community at large."

The collaboration and scholarships announced today reflect Mayor Faulconer and National University's commitment to supporting San Diego's diverse neighborhoods and communities. Under the partnership, City of San Diego employees may receive a 15 percent scholarship and application fees waivers for National University's degree and certification programs. National University is also providing a full scholarship for three employees to encourage continuing education and professional development among city government staff.

National University has 28 campuses, including six in County of San Diego located in the Cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, Carlsbad, and La Mesa. National University offers more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through a one-course-per-month format, the majority of which can be taken onsite or online.

National University is a leader in education throughout San Diego and San Diego County with many notable local alumni including former San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, City Councilmember Myrtle Cole of District Four, City Councilmember Marti Emerald of District Nine, Acting CEO of the Port of San Diego John Bolduc and the former Federal Security Director of San Diego International Airport Michael J. Aguilar.
