San Diego & Tijuana Mayors, City Department Directors Meet to Bring New Opportunities to Mega

Meeting Marks First After Binational Agreement was Signed in November

San Diego - Today Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer traveled to Tijuana to meet with Mayor Jorge Astiazarán and his staff for the first meeting to discuss opportunities for greater binational cooperation. Mayor Faulconer was joined by five city department directors.

The meeting between department directors from both cities was the first of its kind since the Mayors signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two cities in November. The meetings are designed to foster communication between officials from both cities to solve binational issues such as economic development opportunities, promotion of the Mega Region, civil protection, emergency preparedness, environmental services, arts and culture.

"Today I discussed with leaders in Tijuana about how we can seize opportunities that make our Mega Region the envy of the world," Mayor Faulconer said. "I'm certain that this binational process will improve our innovation economy, attract new investment, strengthen our cross-border infrastructure, enhance our global tourism industries and protect our environmental assets."

The Friday meeting was the first of two that are scheduled for this year. The next one is tentatively scheduled for October, though the directors could meet earlier.

The MOU or letter of agreement between the City of Tijuana and City of San Diego is the first agreement between the two cities since the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994. As work on the San Ysidro Point of Entry, Otay Mesa southbound commercial truck crossing and other border and regional economic development projects continue, it is critical that the City of San Diego and Tijuana collaborate at a high level. To help facilitate this much-needed collaboration, Mayors Faulconer and Astiazarán have committed to host biannual meetings with respective department directors.
