Mayor Faulconer's Pledge to Repair 1,000 Miles of Streets Kicks Off with the First Mile

New Budget That Began July 1 Will Double Yearly Road Repair

San Diego - With road repair crews paving the street behind them, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer and City Councilmembers Mark Kersey and Scott Sherman marked the first mile of street repair in the Mayor's ambitious plan to fix 1,000 miles of road over five years.

"Every journey begins with a first step, and this first mile on the road to fixing 1,000 is the latest step we're taking to make sure City Hall is putting our neighborhoods first," Mayor Faulconer said. "We're increasing the amount of street repair we do because this is what San Diegans are asking for. Every community needs better streets, and my goal is to make sure they get them."

At his first State of the City address in January, Mayor Faulconer pledged to make street repair the City's top infrastructure priority. In Fiscal Year 2016, which began July 1, $74 million will be spent fixing more than 300 miles of roads - double the amount repaired annually when the Mayor took office.

"This is a major milestone in our effort to rebuild San Diego," said Councilmember Kersey, Chair of the Council's Infrastructure Committee. "With this first mile, we are on our way to repairing a third of our City streets over the next five years."

The Rio San Diego Drive paving project in Mission Valley marks the first mile of street repaired in Fiscal Year 2016, the first year in Mayor Faulconer's five-year plan to rebuild San Diego roads. The 1,000 miles of road repair will fix more than one-third of the City's entire street network.

"Mission Valley is one of the most heavily traveled communities in San Diego where thousands of residents and tourists come to live, work and play," said Councilmember Sherman, who represents Mission Valley. "It is important to our local economy and to Mission Valley residents that our roads and infrastructure are maintained at the highest levels."

The repairs will be financed with a combination of cash - from sources including Transnet and the Gas Tax - and bond financing.

City Council President Sherri Lightner also voiced her support for the budgetary focus on street repair.

"Within the first week of our new fiscal year, I am pleased to see that work is already being done to improve our infrastructure," Lightner said. "If there is anything that San Diegans are passionate about it's their streets, so it's encouraging to see these projects already being completed."

Data from the most recent street survey in 2011 revealed that 35 percent of City streets were in good condition, 40 percent were in fair condition and 25 percent were in poor condition. The City is currently studying the condition of streets to see how they've changed since 2011 with the results expected by December.
