Mayor Faulconer Appoints New Planning Director

San Diego - Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer today announced the appointment of Jeff Murphy as Director of the Planning Department.

"Community planning is key to empowering our neighborhoods and bringing better infrastructure and opportunities to residents across San Diego," said Mayor Faulconer. "I'm confident that Jeff Murphy's experience will help our city continue to make great strides in providing affordable housing, protecting our environment and enhancing our city infrastructure."

Murphy, a native San Diegan, has spent the last several years serving the City of Encinitas as Planning Director. His creative technological approach to public engagement increased transparency and encouraged residents to participate in land development operations in their communities.

Prior to his role as Planning Director, Murphy served at the County of San Diego in an array of planning positions. He has overseen several land development divisions, supervised countless planning projects, and updated several land development programs, such as the Multiple Species Conservation Program. Murphy was also instrumental in the rebuilding efforts following the wildfires in San Diego in 2003 and 2007.

In addition to these accomplishments, Murphy also has private sector experience in San Diego. As an employee for KPMG, he cultivated relationships with business organizations and community members to foster economic development. Murphy earned a B.S. in Urban and Regional Planning from Cal Poly, Pomona and a Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in city planning from San Diego State University. He currently lives in San Diego with his wife and their two children.
