Faulconer’s First Term Marked by Increase in Neighborhood Services, Major Improvements to Streets, Growth in Innovation Economy, Expanding Opportunity to Underserved Communities

Monday, December 12, 2016 - NEWS RELEASE

San Diego – Continuing his commitment to creating opportunities for all San Diegans and delivering results for every neighborhood, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer was sworn in for a second term as San Diego’s 36th mayor today at an inauguration ceremony held at the historic Balboa Theatre.

“We’ve built a lot of positive momentum by working together, focusing on results and doing what’s best for all of San Diego,” Mayor Faulconer said. “As I took this oath nearly three years ago, I said that change doesn’t just start in the Mayor’s Office – it starts in our communities. That is as true now as it was then. So to every San Diegan, I say let us recommit ourselves to being one city and One San Diego.”

Five members of the 71st San Diego City Council – including three new Councilmembers – and the new City Attorney also took the oath of office. Mayor Faulconer called on them to join him to address major issues San Diego faces including:

  • Continuing to be fiscally prudent and save for the future
  • Pursuing a sustainable environment and economy by implementing the Climate Action Plan
  • Compassionately and collaboratively reducing homelessness
  • Taking action to make housing more affordable for all San Diegans

Mayor Faulconer assumed office in March 2014 on a platform of bringing San Diego together and restoring integrity to City Hall. He won re-election in June 2016.

Mayor Faulconer has overseen major investments in infrastructure repair and neighborhood services, and pushed for more focus on San Diego’s underserved communities.
