Mayor Faulconer and Firefighters Local 145 Ask San Diegans to “Fill the Boot” for a Good Cause

Money Raised Tuesday for Muscular Dystrophy Association Will Help 1,100 Local Families Affected by the Disease

Monday, Sept. 21, 2015 - NEWS RELEASE

San Diego, CA – Standing outside a downtown fire station with a boot in hand, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer and incoming Fire-Rescue Chief Brian Fennessy joined city firefighters from Local 145 today to announce Tuesday’s annual “Fill the Boot” fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Mayor Faulconer, Chief Fennessy and Local 145 Board President Alan Arrollado collected the first donations outside of Fire Station #1 as a way to promote the fundraiser, which will be held citywide on Tuesday.

The “Fill the Boot” campaign for MDA is a 60-year tradition that takes place on busy street intersections in thousands of cities across the United States and Canada. Firefighters have raised more than $650 million to battle the disease since 1954, including $21 million last year.

All of the money raised in San Diego will go to the local MDA chapter, which supports more than 1,100 families affected by the disease in San Diego and Imperial counties.
