San Diego – With his continued push to help and encourage local youth to gain the skills for a career in San Diego’s growing innovation economy, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer today awarded the San Diego Mayor’s Cyber Cup to a group of Westview High School students that bested 124 other teams in a prestigious cybersecurity competition.

The Cyber Cup Challenge – created by the San Diego chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association with support from the San Diego Mayor’s Office – provides months of hands-on experience for middle and high school students as they work side-by-side with cybersecurity professionals.

Teams consisting of five to eight students receive mentorship and training sessions in preparation for competition. They are taught how to protect and defend laptops, networks, servers and more. Then they compete in qualification rounds in which they use the skills they’ve learned to protect computer systems and fend off cyberattacks.

Ten teams made it to the final round where the student team from Westview posted the highest score to win the San Diego Mayor’s Cyber Cup.
