Third New Fire Station to Open Since Mayor Faulconer Took Office Will Serve Downtown’s Growing Population

San Diego – Marking the third new fire station built as part of his commitment to improving neighborhood services throughout the city, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer was joined today by City Councilmember Chris Ward, interim Fire-Rescue Chief Kevin Ester and community leaders to officially open the new Fire Station No. 2 to bolster emergency services for downtown San Diego’s growing population.
“This new modern fire station is the latest example of the significant investments we’re making to improve public safety and protect our neighborhoods,” Mayor Faulconer said. “We’ll now have three fire stations serving a thriving downtown community that has seen an influx of residents, businesses and visitors over the past few decades. This is all about making sure that help gets there fast when you need it.”
Located on Pacific Highway across from the San Diego County Administration Center, the new Fire Station No. 2 will enhance the safety of neighborhood residents and nearby businesses by providing a key station on the west side of the railroad and trolley tracks that slice through downtown. The Fire-Rescue Department has long considered a station on the western waterfront a top priority because of emergency response delays resulting from rail activity.
The project, spearheaded by Civic San Diego, is a 24,680 square-foot, three-story building with rooftop greenery, solar panels and public art. The apparatus bay of the station includes folding doors, rather than traditional roll-up doors for quicker access. It accommodates two rigs and a battalion chief vehicle.
“Bayside Fire Station will provide critical public safety resources and personnel to Downtown,” said Councilmember Ward. “With this new facility, the City will be able to deliver quality neighborhood services to ensure the vibrancy of the densest urban communities where thousands of San Diegans live, work, and play.”
The building includes a commercial grade kitchen, a training room, gym and living facilities. Designed to contribute to the goal of the City’s Climate Action Plan, the building includes sustainability features and is designed to achieve LEED Silver rating or above, with green roofs on the third level and rooftop as well as an angled roof canopy with photovoltaic panels.
“This new downtown fire station, along with two reconstructed neighborhood stations opening soon, are models for efficiency and modern amenities,” said Interim Chief Ester. “These improved working and living conditions benefit not only our firefighters but the communities they serve. Station 2 also fits very well with the character of the Little Italy neighborhood.”
The public artwork was commissioned by the City’s Commission for Arts and Culture through a partnership with Civic San Diego. The artists – Ingram Ober, Marisol Rendón-Ober, and Chuck Moffit – have created a rich and layered experience for viewers, playing off visual parallels between architecture, fire hardware, growing vines and brass Victrola resonating horns.
Since Mayor Faulconer took office, the City has previously opened two other new fire stations in Mission Valley and City Heights with two more opening soon in Hillcrest and Point Loma. In addition, fire stations in Mira Mesa, North Park, Southcrest and La Jolla have received significant renovations.
