Mayor Faulconer Hoists Rainbow Pride Flags Above Gaslamp Quarter and Kicks Off Pride Month

Wednesday, July 9, 2014 - NEWS RELEASE

SAN DIEGO – Celebrating diversity and inclusiveness in the heart of San Diego’s Historic Gaslamp Quarter, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer joined members of the Gaslamp Quarter Association and San Diego LGBT Pride to hoist into place two of 124 rainbow Pride flags that wave over 5th Avenue and kick off the 40th Anniversary of San Diego Pride.

In June 1974, the first gay pride event was held in San Diego. The event included a march from the Center for Social Services at 2250 B Street to Balboa Park. During the parade, marchers had to walk on the sidewalk because the group did not have a city parade permit. This year, Faulconer, who also chairs the Mayors for the Freedom to Marry coalition, will help officially mark the 40th anniversary of Pride in San Diego.
