SAN DIEGO – Armed with spoons and spatulas, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer joined San Diegan Olympian Mebrahtom “Meb” Keflezighi, San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten and California’s Department of Education Nutrition Services to kick off a Summer Fun Café 2014 program and serve a tasty barbecue lunch to more than 1,000 San Diego children and families.  

The San Diego Unified School District's Summer Fun Café program has helped to serve more than 300,000 lunches to kids aged 18 and under each summer since 2003. The Summer Fun Café is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Seamless Summer Feeding Option. The City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department has partnered with the Unified School District to help expand the program to 28 park and recreation center locations, 14 community centers and 19 San Diego Unified schools.
