SAN DIEGO – This morning, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer, U.S. Congresswoman Susan Davis (CA-53) and Brigadier General James W. Bierman, Jr. joined members of the Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) to help provide support for homeless veterans across the City. Since the first Stand Down in 1988, every July VVSD organizes the annual program which provides a wide range of necessities to homeless veterans, including breakfast, picture identification, tents, showers, counseling, dental and medical care.
During the event, Mayor Faulconer provided opening remarks and presented a proclamation to Dr. Jon Nachison Day, co-founder of Stand Down, for providing the inspiration for this nationwide event, which occurs in more than 200 locations across the country every year. After serving as director for VVSD for 27 years, Dr. Nachison is retiring this year.
