Mayor Faulconer Lights Up December Nights
Balboa Park Centennial Celebration Culminates with Annual Holiday Event Enjoyed by Hundreds of Thousands of San Diegans
Friday, December 4, 2015 - NEWS RELEASE
San Diego, CA – Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer and other dignitaries kicked off the annual December Nights festival tonight by flipping the candy cane switch to turn on the holiday lights in Balboa Park.
Last year’s December Nights holiday event served as the opening ceremony for the Centennial – which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition that put San Diego on the world map – and the 2015 December Nights serves as the closing ceremony.
The Centennial was celebrated throughout the year with significant park improvements, such as new LED lighting along El Prado, free public WiFi throughout the park, the reopening of the historic California Tower and the expansion of the Japanese Friendship Garden, among other things. Besides December Nights, the City also held two other signature events – the “Garden Party of the Century” in May and the “Maker Faire” in October – which were attended by tens of thousands of San Diegans.
