SAN DIEGO – Today, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer welcomed attendees at the 2014 BIO International Convention. The four-day convention is the largest global event for the biotechnology world, providing insight on major trends affecting the industry. It showcases contributions of the biotech sector, which provides high-quality, high-wage jobs in the innovation economy.
Sir Richard Branson, Founder of the Virgin Group, delivered a keynote address at the luncheon shortly after Faulconer’s remarks.
This four-day convention (June 23 to June 26) is expected to generate more than $56 million for San Diego’s economy. San Diego County accounts for nearly 26,000 biomedical jobs in California, or 17 percent. The San Diego area is home to more than 3,000 wireless companies and 600 life science companies.
BIO has created several programs and forums especially for San Diego, including a new digital health zone, an innovation zone and a job fair. The convention is expected to draw more than 15,000 industry leaders from 47 states and more than 60 countries. The event will cover more than 180,000 net square feet, and host nearly 1,700 exhibitors.
