Monday, June 15, 2015 - NEWS RELEASE
San Diego, CA – Amid air rockets, inflatable robots, steam-powered vehicles and other awe-inspiring tech gadgets, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer and Councilmember Todd Gloria rode a crawling robot into Balboa Park’s Plaza de Panama to promote innovation at the first annual San Diego Maker Faire and the Balboa Park Centennial’s fall signature event of the year. The announcement also coincided with President Obama’s National “Week of Making,” which lasts this summer from June 12th to June 18th.
Part science fair, part county fair, Maker Faire is a showcase of invention, creativity and a celebration of the Maker Movement. The Maker Movement is a global tech-influenced “do-it-yourself community” that creates their own innovation ecosystem by developing new products and services that influence the world. The San Diego Maker Faire will be a festival of San Diego’s unique innovation economy and incorporate all of Balboa Park.
