Mayor-Commissioned Study Finds that Research Institutes Add $4.6 Billion to San Diego’s Economy
Mayor Faulconer, Speaker Atkins & EDC Release First-Ever Report that Details how San Diego Research Institutes are the Equivalent of 33 U.S. Open Golf Championships

San Diego, CA – Standing in front of the iconic “River of Life” fountain at the internationally-renown Salk Institute, Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer, California State Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins and the San Diego Regional EDC released the first-ever comprehensive analysis of the economic impact of world-class research institutes on our region.
As San Diego’s groundbreaking research continues to create thousands of jobs for the region, Mayor Faulconer worked with the San Diego EDC to commission a report that details the size and scale of San Diego’s research institutions and addresses strategies to support and grow the region’s workforce. Upon completing the study, data shows that San Diego’s research institutions affect roughly 37,000 jobs in region and add $4.6 billion to San Diego’s regional economy, which is the equivalent of 33 U.S. Open Golf Championships.
