San Diego, CA – Standing beside the iconic two-handled U.S. Open Championship trophy above the greens at Torrey Pines, members of the U.S. Golf Association (USGA), civic leaders and other city officials joined Mayor Kevin Faulconer and City Council President Pro Tem Sherri Lightner to announce to the world that the City of San Diego will host the 2021 U.S. Open Championship.
The news conference followed the City Council’s vote, which unanimously approved the agreement between the City of San Diego and USGA to host the event. San Diego last served as host to the U.S. Open Championship in 2008, which is widely recognized as one of the greatest championships in U.S. Open history. More than 295,000 people attended the eight-day event. The current proposal negotiated by the City of San Diego and the USGA will result in the City receiving at least $2.5 million, which is $2 million more than in 2008.
