Mayor Faulconer Statement on City Council Decision to Deny Special Election
City Council Action Jeopardizes Funding for Homeless Services, Road Repair, Convention Center Expansion & SoccerCity Initiative

San Diego – Today the City Council voted against calling for a special election this year, denying San Diegans the opportunity to cast a meaningful vote on two measures that could significantly shape San Diego’s future.
“There is nothing more democratic and fair than holding an election so voters can make their voices heard. But the City Council majority has made the irresponsible and politically-driven decision to deny a public vote. Councilmembers who say they share the community’s priorities were given a chance to act, but they chose to do nothing,” said Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer.
“Our city deserves better than what happened today. To every San Diegan bewildered by the Council’s inability to carry out the simple task of calling an election, your disappointment is understandable, but we must move forward. I remain determined to doing what it takes, including working with the community and City Council, to expand our convention center, help our homeless and tackle the civic issues facing our city.”
Mayor Faulconer urged the City Council to call a special election in November so the public could vote on two time-sensitive initiatives.
The first is a tourism measure that would modernize and expand the Convention Center – a project that is seeing construction costs rising by $3.6 million per month – and create dedicated funding streams to address San Diego’s homeless crisis and fix streets. A recent financial breakdown showed a projected revenue loss and cost impact of more than $75 million if a public vote on the tourism ballot measure is delayed for a year.
City Council President Myrtle Cole committed that the council would discuss the tourism measure again in the fall.
The second is a citizens’ initiative to bring Major League Soccer to San Diego, build a river park and redevelop the Qualcomm Stadium site at no cost to taxpayers. A third-party appraisal released Tuesday valued the Mission Valley properties at $110 million, an amount that would generate millions of dollars in annual revenue for the City when leased at fair market value.
The citizens’ initiative, known as “SoccerCity,” to redevelop the Qualcomm Stadium site will be heard next Monday. The Council will have the option to adopt the initiative or make steps to place it on a future ballot.
