You may pick up holds only during Pickup Service hours (10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.). You do not need to call ahead or book an appointment. Please refer to the hold pick up notice email for the deadline to pick up your items. After that date, your item(s) will be placed back on the shelves.

When arriving, follow the posted signs to find the designated parking/waiting area. You will need to have a mobile device to call the library when you arrive.

When you call the library, you will need to have your library card number ready to present. Staff will retrieve your items, check them out to your account, and let you know that they are coming out to place your materials on the Pickup Service table.

STAY IN YOUR CAR or DESIGNATED WAITING AREA and on the phone until one of our staff members place the items on the Pickup Service table. Remain in your car/waiting area until a staff member tells you that it is safe to leave your car/waiting area and retrieve your items.

Frequently Asked Questions

Browse the FAQs below for more detailed information about contactless Pickup Service, or Ask Us for more information.

What are the safety precautions I should be aware of?

All staff members are required to wear gloves, a face mask and will practice safe social distancing from other staff members and members of the public during the contactless Pickup Service, in accordance to San Diego County workplace safety policies and CDC guidelines. Pickup Service Table will be sanitized regularly. Anyone picking up materials must wear a mask.

How long can I keep checked out materials?

All materials checked out during Pickup Service will be checked out for 30 days or until further notice. Due dates will be extended as needed during Library closure.

  • Beginning Tuesday, May 26th, there will be new due dates for all new items picked up via Pickup Service. If you checked out your items prior to Monday, March 16th, you may observe the current due date of June 12th.

Who can use Pickup Service?

Pickup Service is available for current physical library card holders whose account is in good standing. If you have a temporary library card number, please call the library you choose to visit so they can update your account and arrange for a permanent library card to be issued when you check out.

What if my account is not in good standing?

We highly recommend that you check the status of your library account before heading over to the Library. If you have a balance due $10.00 or higher or have been referred to the City Treasurer, you must pay the outstanding balance in full before you can pick up any held items. For your safety and the safety of our staff, we will not be able to process payments at pick up. If you would like to pay your balance, you may do so through our online payment system prior to picking up your items.

Who can pick up my items?

Anyone may pick up your items, but they must present your library card or have your library card number to pick up your items. Staff will not release items to those without a library card number. We cannot accept a driver’s license or other form of identification in lieu of a library card number.

What if I no longer want to check out the items I have on hold?

Please call 619-236-5800 or you may also contact your local branch library to cancel your holds.

How do I reserve items?

Note: This service will be available beginning June 1st

You can reserve most titles online or over the phone. There is no fee for this service. Once your hold is available, you will be notified via email. Please refer to the hold pick up notice email for the deadline to pick up your items. After that date, your item(s) will be placed back on the shelves.

If you have a temporary library card number you will have a two-item hold limit. Please call the library you choose to visit so they can update your account and arrange for a permanent library card to be issued when you check out.

How do I renew items?

During Library closure, you will not be able to renew your library materials. The Library will continue to extend due dates for items while we remain closed.

Where do I return items?

The Library is not accepting return materials at this time. For now, Pickup Service is to check out items only, so please do not bring back your checked-out items at this time. We cannot accept them.

What if I don’t have a car, but still want Pickup Service?

Walkup Service is available at all services offering Pickup Service. When you arrive, please find the designated signage and waiting area for Walkup Service and call the number listed on the sign. When you call the phone number, you will need to have your library card number ready to present. Staff will retrieve your items and let you know that they are coming out to place your materials on the Pickup Service table. Do not approach the table to retrieve items until staff tell you it is safe to approach the table to retrieve your items.

How do I renew my library card online?

Library cards that would have expired during Library closure have been extended through June 30th now and will be extended as necessary during Library closure. If your library card expired before that time, please contact the Library for assistance.

Can I still put items in the outside book drop?

No. Our outside book drop boxes and book returns will remain closed at this time. Please continue to check the Library’s website for updates on when we will resume this process.
