San Diego Public Library provides resources to patrons online through our eLibrary as well as access to physical materials through our limited Contactless Pickup Service. Holds pickup is also available at twelve In-Person Library Service locations.

Contactless Pickup Step-by-Step

You may pick up holds Monday - Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. (Everyday between the hour of 1 - 2 p.m. the library will be closed for mid-day sanitation break.) You do not need to call ahead or book an appointment. Please refer to the hold pick up notice email for the deadline and location to pick up your items. After that date, your item(s) will be placed back on the shelves.

    Call your pickup location to notify staff you will be picking up your holds. If you have a mobile device, you can call the library before you arrive or onsite. Please have your library card ready.
    Staff will retrieve your items and check them out to your account.
    Staff will come out to place your materials on the Pickup Service table.
    Please follow the posted signage and be sure to practice social distancing when retrieving your items.

    What are the safety precautions I should be aware of?

    All staff members are required to wear gloves, a face mask and will practice safe social distancing from other staff members and members of the public during the Contactless Pickup Service, in accordance to San Diego County workplace safety policies and CDC guidelines. Pickup Service Table will be sanitized regularly. Anyone picking up materials must wear a mask.

    How do I convert my temporary digital library card into a permanent library card to use Contactless Pickup Service?

    Customers may convert their digital library card into a permanent physical library card by contacting any of our In-Person or Contactless Pickup Service locations. You will need to present a valid identification to be issued a permanent library card.

    Where do I pick up my holds?

    Please refer to your holds notice to verify your Contactless Pickup Service location. Please note that we continue to expand Contactless Pickup Service locations. If you wish to transfer your hold to a different Contactless Pickup Service location, please call the location where your item is being held to request the transfer. If you need additional assistance, please contact the Library at 619-236-5800 or via email at weblibrary@sandiego.gov. You can also visit us at one of our In-Person Library Service locations.

    Who can use Contactless Pickup Service?

    Contactless Pickup Service is available for current physical library card holders whose account is in good standing. If you have a temporary library card number, please call the library you choose to visit so they can update your account and arrange for a permanent library card to be issued when you check out.

    What if I need special arrangements to use Pickup Service?

    If special arrangements are required, please contact your Contactless Pickup Service location to make arrangements. You may also email weblibrary@sandiego.gov if you are not able to use a phone for your request.

    What if my account is not in good standing?

    We highly recommend that you check the status of your library account before heading over to the Library. If you have a balance due of $10.00 or higher you must pay the outstanding balance in full through our online payment system before you can pick up any held itemsIf you have been referred to the City Treasurer and have questions, please contact them directly. For your safety and the safety of our staff, we will not be able to process payments at pick up.

    Who can pick up my items?

    Anyone may pick up your items, but they must present your library card or have your library card number to pick up your items. Staff will not release items to those without a library card number. We cannot accept a driver’s license or other form of identification in lieu of a library card number.

    What if I no longer want to check out the items I have on hold?

    Please call the Contactless Pickup Service location where your item is being held to cancel the hold. For more information please call 619-236-5800 or email weblibrary@sandiego.gov for assistance.

    How do I reserve items?

    You can reserve most titles online or by calling your local Library branch. There is no fee for this service. Once your hold is available, you will be notified via email. Please refer to the hold pick up notice email for the deadline to pick up your items. After that date, your item(s) will be placed back on the shelves.

    If you have a temporary library card number you will have a two-item hold limit. Please call the library you choose to visit so they can update your account and arrange for a permanent library card to be issued when you check out.

    How do I renew items?

    • Renewing online: You can renew materials by logging into your online account.
    • Renewing by phone: Please call your local Library branch to renew by phone (library card number required).
    • Automatic renewals: One day before they are due, items will be automatically renewed from their original due date if they are eligible for renewal. Items with active holds and no available copies, already renewed five [5] times, or belonging to the categories* listed below are not eligible for renewal. Please verify your due dates by logging into the online catalog.

    *The following items cannot be renewed: items with outstanding holds, Express books and DVDs, eReader devices, interlibrary loan materials, laptop computers, museum passes and story kits.

    Where do I return items?

    You may return your library material through our book drops at any of our 36 library locations. Book drops are open 24-hours, 7 days a week. More information can be found here. For the safety of patrons and staff, returned library materials are being quarantined for a period of 24-hours before being checked in. Please allow up to 2 days for returns to be removed from your account.

    Can I still put items in the outside book drop?

    Yes, you can return materials through our book drops at 36 library locations. Book drops are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At this time, we cannot accept donations.

    What if I don’t have a car, but still want Contactless Pickup Service?

    Walkup Service is available at all locations offering ContactlessPickup Service. When you arrive, please find the designated signage and waiting area for Walkup Service and call the number listed on the sign. When you call the phone number, you will need to have your library card number ready to present. Staff will retrieve your items and let you know that they are coming out to place your materials on the Pickup Service table. Please follow the posted signage and be sure to practice social distancing when retrieving your items.

    How do I renew my library card online?

    Library cards that would have expired during Library closure have been extended through December 31st. If you need additional assistance, please contact the Library at 619-236-5800 or weblibrary@sandiego.gov . You can also visit us at one of our In-Person Library Service locations.
