City Accessibility Programs

Blue Curb Parking Request 

Disabled persons parking zones, or blue zones (blue painted curbs), can be obtained for business districts, activity centers and residential areas. Blue curb requests can be submitted to the City's Traffic Engineering Division via web form, via email at trafficops@sandiego.gov or by calling 619-533-3126.

Therapeutic Recreation Services

Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS) has extensive programming for children and adults with any type of disability. Programs include adaptive sports, kids' adventure camps, family camping trips, talents shows, and more! Visit the TRS website to view the current calendar of activities and to learn more.

Accessible Beaches 

Learn about the City's accessible beach programs, including access mats that allow wheelchairs to access the beaches and bays, and free beach/sand wheelchairs rentals.

Inclusion Aides

Inclusion aides facilitate the inclusion of individuals with disabilities into programs at their neighborhood recreation centers. This assures that Park & Recreation programs areSmiling girl with painted hands accessible and usable by all citizens.

Inclusion aides conduct assessments, develop goals for participation and provide necessary support. These include increased supervision levels, adapting games/activities and training of recreation center staff to ensure that the needs of persons with disabilities are being met.

Library Programs

READ/San Diego Adult Literacy Program

In San Diego County, approximately 422,000 adults cannot read and write well enough to meet everyday needs and pursue professional goals. The Library's READ/San Diego Adult Literacy Program is a free literacy service offering English as a Second Language and family literacy instruction for adults 18 years and older.

I CAN! and I CAN, Too! Centers

Library services for persons with disabilities are provided by the I CAN! Center. Basic services include: Print/Tape Media services, TTY/TDD reference service, Assistive Technology. The I CAN! Center is located on the first floor of the Central Library, next to the Literature Section.

The I CAN, Too! Center is designed for children with accessibility needs and their caregivers.

Homebound Services Program

Library materials are delivered and retrieved directly at your door by library staff. Customers who are unable to physically get to the library are eligible for homebound services. Ill-health or disability, certified by a doctor, will signify eligibility. The inability to use public transportation for elderly citizens is also considered as a mobility impairment and a reason for eligibility.

Service Animals

Service animals, as defined by the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), are allowed to accompany people with disabilities in all areas where members of the public are allowed to go as long as the dog is under control of the handler and is housebroken.
