Water System Operations

The Public Utilities Department is dedicated to providing customers with a safe and reliable water supply, and quality customer service in an environmentally sensitive manner. The Department oversees a municipal water system that includes:

  • More than 3,300 miles of distribution pipeline
  • Nine reservoirs with a total capacity of 415,000 acre-feet.
  • Three water treatment plants
  • 29 distribution reservoirs and standpipes
  • 130 different pressure zones with 49 pumps
  • More than 276,000 metered service connections
  • More than 25,000 fire hydrants
  • An average of 200 million gallons of water delivered daily to customers
  • 1.3 million customers in the cities of San Diego, Del Mar, Coronado and Imperial Beach
