City Of San Diego To Construct Pipeline Along Miramar Road
Local Water Service To Be Improved

SAN DIEGO - The City of San Diego Water Department will break ground in April on an important infrastructure improvement project. The new Miramar Road Water Pipeline will provide a backup supply of water to the areas of La Jolla, University City, Sorrento Valley and Miramar Road. The pipeline will improve the existing water service in these areas as well as meet the needs of future growth.

The new 36-inch diameter pipeline will parallel the existing 16-inch diameter water pipeline under Miramar Road and run 4.7 miles from Eastgate Mall to Kearny Mesa Road. The installation of this new pipeline will ensure water service reliability and allow the Water Department to inspect existing pipelines in the system while maintaining adequate water pressure for residents and businesses in the area.

Preliminary construction on the Miramar Road Pipeline is scheduled to begin in March, with nighttime pipeline installation beginning in April. The project is expected to last approximately 15 months. The total project cost is approximately $13.2 million.

The primary construction method will involve open-cut trenching, with tunneling under I-15 and other major intersections. Work along Miramar Road will primarily occur at night to minimize disruption to businesses and traffic impacts on this important thoroughfare.

The City of San Diego Water Department is committed to working with local residents and businesses to ensure project construction impacts are minimized. The City will increase traffic control signage and implement noise control measures during the construction phase. In addition, the project will be closely monitored to assure compliance with the City's strict enforcement codes and other regulatory agency requirements.

The Miramar Road Pipeline Project is part of the City of San Diego Water Department's ongoing Capital Improvements Program (CIP). The projects in the CIP, along with the City's existing pipelines, reservoirs, treatment plants and pump stations, will ensure a safe and reliable water supply that will protect the region's job base, environment and overall quality of life for generations to come.
