CITY OFFERS FREE BOAT SAFETY INSPECTIONS AS PART OF NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK
San Diego, CA - The City of San Diego Water Department Rangers will be performing free boat safety inspections May 17 - 19, 2002 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at San Vicente Reservoir to celebrate National Safe Boating Week. In conjunction with the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, the U.S. Coast Guard and the California Department of Boating and Waterways, the public is invited to visit the information booth at the lake, win prizes, take home free safety equipment and learn more about how to enjoy a safe and fun day on the water.
National Safe Boating Week was designated by the United States Congress and, in California, was proclaimed by Governor Gray Davis to encourage boaters to take appropriate safety courses to decrease the number of accidents and fatalities on our waterways. The most common cause of boating accidents is operator inexperience and an estimated 85 percent of all boating fatalities could be prevented by simply wearing a life jacket.
Located at 13500 Moreno Avenue in Lakeside, San Vicente Reservoir is one of nine municipal lakes in operation by the City of San Diego. Since 1913, the City has offered the public recreational use of its reservoirs including boating and fishing and is widely recognized as a pioneer in the multiple use of water supply reservoirs. For more information about the Water Department and its public recreation programs, please call the City's Water Operations Public Information Office at (619) 527-3121 or go to our website at www.sandiego.gov/water.
