Community Area: Central Urbanized

Photo of The Southeastern San Diego Community lies south of Highway 94, west of Interstate 805, east of Interstate 5, and shares a border with National City. Southeastern San Diego includes the neighborhoods of Sherman Heights, Logan Heights, Grant Hill, Memorial, Stockton, Mount Hope, Mountain View, Southcrest, and Shelltown.

Southeastern San Diego is a large urbanized and ethnically diverse community located adjacent to downtown San Diego. The original Southeast San Diego Community Plan was adopted by the San Diego City Council in 1969, and became the basis of the City's "Model Cities Program." In 1987 the community plan was updated and adopted by the Council. One of the features of this community plan is the identification of the various neighborhoods within the planning area. This includes a move toward establishing neighborhood identity which is linked to each neighborhood's culture and history through the involvement of citizens and the establishment of revitalization teams.

Chollas Creek Enhancement Program

The City of San Diego is undertaking the Chollas Creek Enhancement Program as a key element in revitalizing this culturally-rich portion of the City. The goal is to create an open space system that lends identity to this area and provides a safe recreational and natural resource for the region.

Construction on two Pilot Projects for the Chollas Creek Enhancement Program has begun. Segment 2A is at the intersection of Market Street and Euclid Avenue and Segment 8 is adjacent to the intersection of South 38th and Alpha Streets. The scope of this project includes the removal of concrete channels along the creek, restoration of native vegetation and the creation of a linear park type setting with the inclusion of a trail system and an educational / interpretive element. This project will transform these two sections of the creek and the surrounding areas into positive open space features that the community can be proud of.
