The City's Water Branch has one of the largest and most complex water storage, treatment, and delivery systems in the nation. Nine reservoirs hold the raw water before it is moved to one of three plants for treatment. It is then pumped through hundreds of miles of pipeline to thirsty San Diegans.
Since San Diego is a semi-arid region, 85 to 90 percent of the water used here is imported. Therefore, the Water Branch is committed to conservation and finding alternative water supplies such as recycled water and groundwater.
