Duties and Functions

The Defined Contribution Plans Trustee Board (the Board) oversee the investments of the City’s defined contribution plans (the Plans).   The Plans include the SPSP, SPSP-H, 401(a) and 401(k).  The Board meets quarterly, at minimum, to monitor fund performance.  The Board also oversees the external investment consultant and third party administrator.   With guidance from the Plan’s Investment Policy and recommendations from the investment consultant the Board may add, change or replace a fund.

2024 401(a), SPSP, and SPSP-H Plan Trustee Call for Nominations

Notice is hereby given of the impending election of a 401(a), SPSP, or SPSP-H Plan Trustee to serve as a member of the Defined Contribution Plans Trustee Board for the 2024-2027 term. Nomination Petitions for candidates must be filed with the Risk Management Department, Employee Savings Section, no later than June 28, 2024.  The candidate must meet the following conditions and qualifications:

  1. The candidate must have completed his or her probationary period of employment and currently be contributing to one of the following three plans: 401(a), SPSP, or SPSP-H plan.
  2. The 2024 Call for Nominations and Petition must be signed by no less than ten (10) active (currently making contributions) 401(a), SPSP, or SPSP-H Plan participants and returned via email to retirement@sandiego.gov no later than 5 p.m. on June 28, 2024.

It should be emphasized that the Trustee is expected to serve the entire 3-year term, to participate in all Trustee meetings (quarterly, with special meetings when needed), and to accept additional committee work assignments as necessary from time to time. It is therefore vital that each candidate have sufficient time to properly fulfill the obligation accepted by all members of the Trustee Board. Trustees do not receive any compensation.
