About the Center
The San Diego Public Library (SDPL) is an officially designated Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) that is part of a nationwide library network maintained by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The Patent and Trademark Resource Center is located on the 3rd floor of the Central Library. You do not need to visit SDPL in-person to access search tools, but the library provides certain resources (e.g. a current collection of full-color Plant patents, and legal reference books) that are only accessible in-person.

PTRC Representatives are library staff who are information experts trained on how to use search tools to access patent and trademark information. Representatives can:
- Demonstrate how to use search tools to conduct a patent or trademark search
- Direct you to information and explain the application process and fee schedule

Successful Inventing: Protection for your innovation

Federal trademark searching: Overview
June 21, 2024—12 p.m. – 1 p.m. -- VIRTUAL
This webinar will introduce you to the fundamental mechanics of using our trademark search system. It’s geared toward new users and those interested in conducting basic searches. We’ll cover:
- Why you should search
- Basic search strategy
- Common searches
- Finding help
This information will be presented live via Webex from 3-4 p.m. ET on Friday, June 21, and will conclude with a question-and-answer session.

Attend DOCX filing training
June 27, 2024—11 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – VIRTUAL
Join us online June 27, 2-3 p.m. ET to learn how to file patent-related documents in DOCX format using Patent Center. You will hear from experts on our eCommerce Modernization (eMod) team, who will provide demonstrations and answer your questions.
This session is one of several free training sessions found on the DOCX filing series page.
Instructions for joining the Webex training session will be provided via email to each registrant.
DOCX is a word processing file format based on open standards and is supported by many popular word processing applications. As an open standard format, DOCX offers a safe and stable basis for authoring and processing intellectual property documents. Learn more about filing in DOCX in this hour-long session.
We encourage you to explore DOCX filing using the Patent Center training mode at any time. Training mode does not save or store data in our systems.
San Diego's History of Innovation

In this session, attendees will explore the tapestry of ideas, inventions and patents that have emerged from the San Diego Region.
You'll learn how to conduct historical patent research from experts from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Staff from the Patent and Trademark Resource Center will also demonstrate how to conduct research by exploring significant San Diegan utility, design, and plant patents. You won't want to miss this opportunity to explore San Diego's history of innovation!

In this information session, Swifties, educators and creatives will learn trademark fundamentals from intellectual property experts--all through the lens of Taylor Swift’s iconic brand.
Librarians from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the San Diego Public Library will teach you something they can't take away1—how to read trademarks, conduct searches for the latest drops, and how you can protect your own creations.
