Resident of San Ysidro Senior Village Affordable Apartments Shares His Story
January 5, 2024 | City News Team
After experiencing years of homelessness, John was excited to finally have a key to his own place. John moved into San Ysidro Senior Village in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but he still remembers the joy he felt when his case manager told him he would soon have a place to call home.
Now, John enjoys tending to the Village’s community garden with his dog, Savvy. John especially cherishes how safe he feels at the Village and how he always has someone he can count on – either a community staff member or a neighbor.
San Ysidro Senior Village provides 50 affordable apartment homes for seniors aged 55 and up who experience homelessness. National Community Renaissance developed the complex with a loan from the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC). SDHC also awarded 50 vouchers to assist residents – including John – in paying their rent.
Located along San Ysidro Boulevard, the development is less than a mile away from the Beyer Boulevard Trolley Station.
San Ysidro Senior Village features a 1,300-square-foot community center and private offices for case management. Other amenities include onsite laundry facilities, storage lockers and bike racks.
Rents at San Ysidro Village will remain affordable for 50 years for seniors 55 and older with an income of up to 50% of San Diego’s Area Median Income.
