Resident of San Diego Square Affordable Apartments Shares Their Story

Domingo moved into San Diego Square affordable housing almost two years ago, and he says his quality of life has improved dramatically since then.

San Diego Square currently provides 154 affordable apartments for seniors 62 and up with income at or below 50% of AMI. Tenants pay rent based on household income. The complex is located near Downtown bus and trolley lines, making moving around easy and convenient for its residents.

The property was built in 1908 on land owned by the City of San Diego. In 2018, San Diego Housing Commission bought the land and rehabilitated the property with financing from Multifamily Housing Revenue Bonds and low-income housing tax credits, both of which require the apartment complex to be affordable. San Diego Housing Commission’s nonprofit affiliate, Housing Development Partners, completed the renovation.

Seniors interested in living at San Diego Square can contact (619) 239-2073 or sandiegosquare@winnco.com to be added to the interest list.

Earlier this year, Mayor Todd Gloria signed an executive order to speed up the approval of 100% affordable housing development projects. More housing units are on the way for the most vulnerable among San Diego residents!
